Just one lone surfer left in the evening, waiting for that last wave to finish an epic day. Saunton Sands, has always held a special place in my heart. The massive, never ending beach and the choice of waves has always made it special. This painting was done near the dunes about a 1/4 mile down the beach from the Saunton Sands Hotel and the carpark below, with the headland of Heartland Point off to the left. I had spotted a few guys in the water and got myself set up for a good afternoon of painting and sketching from the beach. As the day wore on the light became, what I can only describe as glassy; the colours turning lilac, making silhouettes change hue in an instant and catching bright specs on the water. Eventually the breaks between sets got longer and folks began to head back to the carpark. This one surfer stayed a while, holding his board and stretching a hand above his eyes to protect a little from the glare; he looked for all the world as if he was saying 'come on, just one more'. I had already been painting and getting down the lilac colours so I was able to quickly paint him into the scene. A lucky break for me because it gave a real focus out of the beauty of those colours and he held that position just long enough for me to catch the essence of that moment. The painting is in oils on a 24 x 18 inch stretched canvas, and is framed in white wood approx 2'' in width.
