This painting made in Bideford, North Devon, came about after a drawing session at Underfalls Yard, Bristol. I was just packing up and walking by the end of the harbour towards my van. I spotted a duck making its way from the pool of the harbour up a small tributary, I followed it making quick drawings as I did so. On reviewing the drawings, I was attracted by the fact that most of the composition within which the duck found itself was made up of reflections, apart from one hard edge of quay. After some more drawing the painting developed, the wake from the duck being particularly taxing. The name Alys is an alternative way to spell Alice. Why Alys, because I thought that the reflected components made up a mirror in which the duck travelled, a sort of Alys through the looking glass. Alys close up 1 I had followed the duck as it made its way from the main harbour basin up this small tributary, drawing all the while. As it entered the narrower space, I was struck by the pattern the wake made in the confined space.
